Method
A dollar from 2000 is worth what its goods cost now: the amount × the CPI now ÷ the CPI in 2000. For 2000 the calculator uses BLS’s annual average, the mean of the twelve monthly indexes; pick a month above for a month-to-month figure, which is how BLS’s own CPI Inflation Calculator works. $1 from 2000, worked out
The CPI-U averaged 172.2 in 2000 and 334.980 in August 2026. Divide the two: 334.980 ÷ 172.2 = 1.945, so $1 of 2000 goods costs $1.95 now. The same factor scales any amount: $10,000 in 2000 is $19,453 today, a total rise of 95% or 2.58% a year over 26 years.
Two calm decades, then a jump
The CPI averaged 172.2 in 2000, and from 2000 to 2020 it rose about 2.1% a year: every year’s change was between −0.4% and 3.8%.
The 2007–09 financial crisis and Great Recession interrupted it the other way. The 12-month rate reached 5.6% in July 2008, then the annual average fell 0.4% in 2009, the first yearly fall since 1949. The Fed cut its target rate to 0–0.25% by December 2008, worried about the risk of deflation.
Then the pandemic surge undid two decades of calm in two years: the CPI rose 4.7% in 2021 and 8.0% in 2022. All told, prices now are 1.95 times their 2000 level.

How the value of a dollar is worked out
A dollar from 2000 is worth what its goods cost now: the amount × the CPI now ÷ the CPI in 2000. For 2000 the calculator uses BLS’s annual average, the mean of the twelve monthly indexes; pick a month above for a month-to-month figure, which is how BLS’s own CPI Inflation Calculator works.
The index is the CPI-U, all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted: the series BLS publishes back to 1913. It measures the prices urban consumers pay, so it says what a dollar buys, not what an investment earned.
value now = amount × CPI(August 2026) ÷ CPI(2000)
