How this works

Method

A dollar from 1990 is worth what its goods cost now: the amount × the CPI now ÷ the CPI in 1990. For 1990 the calculator uses BLS’s annual average, the mean of the twelve monthly indexes; pick a month above for a month-to-month figure, which is how BLS’s own CPI Inflation Calculator works. $1 from 1990, worked out

The CPI-U averaged 130.7 in 1990 and 334.980 in August 2026. Divide the two: 334.980 ÷ 130.7 = 2.563, so $1 of 1990 goods costs $2.56 now. The same factor scales any amount: $10,000 in 1990 is $25,630 today, a total rise of 156% or 2.64% a year over 36 years.

The 1990s and the Great Moderation

The decade opened with a brief rise: the 12-month rate reached 6.3% in October 1990, and the annual average rose 5.4% in 1990, the most since 1982. It did not last.

From the mid-1980s to 2007 the economy had what the Fed’s historians call the Great Moderation: inflation was low and relatively stable, and the period held the longest economic expansion since World War II. Their verdict on why: better monetary policy was key, helped by changes such as the shift from manufacturing to services.

From 1991 to 2000 the CPI rose between 1.6% and 4.2% a year. Over the whole decade prices rose 32%, against 112% in the 1970s.

How the value of a dollar is worked out

A dollar from 1990 is worth what its goods cost now: the amount × the CPI now ÷ the CPI in 1990. For 1990 the calculator uses BLS’s annual average, the mean of the twelve monthly indexes; pick a month above for a month-to-month figure, which is how BLS’s own CPI Inflation Calculator works.

The index is the CPI-U, all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted: the series BLS publishes back to 1913. It measures the prices urban consumers pay, so it says what a dollar buys, not what an investment earned.

value now = amount × CPI(August 2026) ÷ CPI(1990)
