How this works
Method
Multiply square feet by 0.09290304. A foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m², with no rounding. That one multiplication is the whole conversion. Full method

How to convert square feet to square meters
Multiply square feet by 0.09290304. A foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m², with no rounding. That one multiplication is the whole conversion.
A 2,000 sq ft house is 2,000 × 0.09290304 = 185.8 m². A 12 by 12 ft bedroom, 144 sq ft, is 13.38 m². It is usually easier to convert the room’s sides first and multiply after: 12 ft is 3.6576 m, and 3.6576² gives the same 13.38 m².
Never convert an area with the length factor. Multiplying 144 sq ft by 0.3048 gives 43.9, which is meaningless; the factor has to be squared because an area has two dimensions.

- The international foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m². Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8: conversion factors by unit.
- The US survey foot, slightly longer, was retired at the end of 2022; all US area conversions now use the international foot. Source: NIST, The U.S. survey foot (deprecated from 1 January 2023).
How to estimate square feet to square meters in your head
Divide by 10, then take off about 7%. A square meter is 10.76 sq ft, so dividing by ten overshoots a little: 2,000 sq ft ÷ 10 = 200, less 7% (14) = 186 m², almost exactly right.
For a rough feel, “eleven square feet to the square meter” is easy to remember and errs by only 2%.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many square meters is 1,000 square feet?
1,000 sq ft is 92.9 m². An apartment listed at 1,000 sq ft in the US would be listed at about 93 m² in Europe.
How do I convert a room measured in feet?
Either multiply the two sides in feet and convert the area (× 0.0929), or convert each side to meters (× 0.3048) and multiply. Both give the same answer: a 10 × 14 ft room is 140 sq ft, or 13.0 m².
Why is it 0.0929 and not 0.3048?
Because 0.3048 converts feet, a length. A square foot is a foot in each direction, so the factor is 0.3048 squared, 0.09290304.
