How to convert inches to feet
Divide by 12, because a foot holds 12 inches. 30 inches ÷ 12 = 2.5 ft.
Decimal feet and feet plus inches are two ways to write one length. 64 inches ÷ 12 = 5.3333 ft; the whole feet are 5, and 64 − 5 × 12 = 4 inches remain, so 64 inches is 5 ft 4 in, not 5.4 ft.
Plans and estimates sometimes list lengths in decimal feet: 100 inches is 8.3333 ft, which on a tape measure is 8 ft 4 in.
To check an answer, run it backwards by multiplying the feet by 12. 7.25 ft × 12 = 87 inches, so a board marked 87 inches long is seven and a quarter feet.
