How to convert hectares to acres

Divide hectares by 0.40468564224, or multiply by 2.47105. The divisor is the exact size of an acre in hectares: an acre is 4,046.8564224 m², and a hectare is 10,000 m², a square 100 meters on each side.

A 12 hectare vineyard is 12 × 2.47105 = 29.65 acres. A 40 hectare farm is 98.84 acres, and 100 hectares, one square kilometer, is 247.1 acres.

Because a hectare is 100 m by 100 m, it is easy to pace out. An acre laid out as a square would be about 63.6 m on a side, so a hectare holds just under two and a half of those squares.

acres = hectares ÷ 0.40468564224 (≈ hectares × 2.47105)

How to estimate hectares to acres in your head

Multiply by 2.5, then take off 1%. Two and a half acres to the hectare is very slightly too many: 12 ha × 2.5 = 30 acres, less 1% gives 29.7, against an exact 29.65.

To go quickly from square kilometers, remember that 1 km² is 100 ha, which is about 247 acres.
