GB to TB Converter
Type gigabytes to get terabytes, in decimal units as drives are sold or binary units as your computer may count them.
512 GB =
0.512TB
512 gigabytes is 0.512 terabytes.
- In binary units (1024)
- 0.5 TiB
- 1 GB
- 0.001 TB
- 1 TB
- 1,000 GB
How to convert GB to TB
Divide gigabytes by 1,000. Tera means a trillion, a thousand times giga, so 2,000 GB of photo backups make exactly 2 TB, and a 750 GB laptop drive is 0.75 TB.
If both sizes are binary, as in a Windows folder or a Linux disk tool that shows GiB, divide by 1,024 instead: 750 GiB is 0.7324 TiB.
Cloud storage plans are priced in decimal terabytes. To see how full a 2 TB plan is, add up your files in GB and divide the total by 1,000, then by the plan size.
terabytes = gigabytes ÷ 1,000
- Tera (T) is the SI prefix for 10¹², so 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; the binary tebibyte (TiB) is 2⁴⁰ bytes, about 10% larger. Source: NIST, Prefixes for binary multiples (IEC 80000-13).
How to estimate GB to TB in your head
Shift the decimal point three places left: 512 GB is about half a terabyte (0.512 TB), and 1,800 GB is 1.8 TB. Four common SSD sizes, 256, 512, 1,000 and 2,000 GB, are roughly a quarter, a half, one and two terabytes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many GB make 1 TB?
1,000 GB make 1 TB. In binary units it takes 1,024 GiB to make 1 TiB.
Is 512 GB half a terabyte?
Very nearly: 512 GB is 0.512 TB. The size comes from flash memory chips, which are made in powers of two, then sold with decimal labels.
Why does a 1 TB SSD show less free space than 1,000 GB?
Two reasons stack up. Windows reports the capacity in binary units, so 1,000 GB appears as 931 GiB, and the operating system, recovery partition and file system then claim their own share before you save anything.
Should I buy a 1 TB or 2 TB drive for backups?
Add up what you need to back up in GB and divide by 1,000 for TB. Then leave room: backup software keeps older versions of files that change, and your photo and video library will keep growing.
