How to find a percentage of a number

A percentage is a number of hundredths: 15% means 15 out of every 100. To take 15% of something, turn the percentage into a decimal by dividing by 100 (15 ÷ 100 = 0.15) and multiply the number by it. For 15% of 240 that is 0.15 × 240 = 36.

Multiplication works in either order, which gives a handy shortcut: X% of Y is always the same as Y% of X. So 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4, and 4% of 75 equals 75% of 4, which is 3.

For mental maths, build from 10% and 1%. Moving the decimal point one place left gives 10% (10% of 240 is 24), half of that is 5% (12), and adding them gives 15% (36). The same trick handles a 20% tip: double the 10%.

X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 20% of 50?

20% of 50 is 10: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2, and 0.2 × 50 = 10. Or find 10% (5) and double it.

How do I work out a 15% tip?

Take 10% of the bill by moving the decimal point one place left, then add half of that. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40 and 5% is $3.20, so a 15% tip is $9.60.

Can a percentage be more than 100%?

Yes. 150% of 40 is 1.5 × 40 = 60, more than the number you started with. Anything above 100% is more than the whole.

Is X% of Y the same as Y% of X?

Always, because both are X × Y ÷ 100. Swapping can make a sum easy: 4% of 25 is 25% of 4, which is 1.
