How this works

Method

With no wardrobe it builds a look from colour schemes; with yours it picks from what you own, leaving out pieces archived, in the wash or worn recently. A pick must suit the occasion and the weather, then it is scored on colour harmony (the Ou–Luo model and scheme rules, in OKLab), light against dark, warmth (garment insulation summed as in ISO 9920, against the UTCI clothing model), formality and rotation. The same day and wardrobe give the same pick until you shuffle.

How denim with light blue scores

The engine scores a pair of colours as a top and trousers, with the parts of its outfit score that depend only on colour. Denim has a lightness of 0.52 and a colourfulness (chroma) of 0.07; light blue has 0.82 and 0.06.

  • Light against dark: the lightness gap is 0.31, which earns 1.00 of 1.
  • Harmony: the Ou–Luo model gives 0.81; blended half and half with the all-neutral scheme’s credit of 0.95, that is 0.88.
  • One statement piece: 1.00 of 1.

(0.22 × 0.88 + 0.08 × 1.00 + 0.07 × 1.00) ÷ 0.37 = 0.93

The weights are the ones the tool uses for these parts of every outfit. The harmony model was fitted to people’s ratings of flat colour patches on a screen, not clothes, so treat the score as a strong hint rather than a verdict.

Denim counts as a neutral

Mid-blue denim is a muted blue (lightness 0.52, chroma 0.07). Stylists treat it as a neutral that goes with nearly everything, and the tool follows that convention. Blue-on-blue pairings score well because similar hues are rated harmonious in lab studies: the harmony model alone gives light blue 0.81 of 1.

White and navy are the steady choices. Beige and khaki are warmer, and yellow, mustard and sage add colour without clashing.

Double denim

A light blue shirt is not denim, but a denim shirt with jeans is the “double denim” look. Stylists say it works when the two washes are clearly different, a light shirt with dark jeans or the other way round. The tool checks for a lightness difference between the two denims and labels the rule as convention.

Here the shirt is 31 points lighter than the jeans on a 100-point scale, enough for the two to read as separate pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colour top goes with blue jeans?

White, light blue, navy, grey and black are the easy ones. For colour, try mustard, sage, rust or pink: denim behaves like a neutral, so it takes one accent well.

Can I wear a denim shirt with jeans?

Yes, if the washes are clearly different, such as a light denim shirt with dark jeans. Two similar mid-blues can look like one suit.

Black or brown shoes with jeans?

Both work. Brown leather is warm and casual, black is a little sharper, and white sneakers are the most relaxed.

Do navy and denim go together?

Yes. They are close in hue, so the pairing is calm. Dark jeans with a navy top can look very dark; a lighter wash separates them.
