Binary to Hex Converter

Type a binary number to see it in hex, grouped four bits at a time from the right, each group read as one hex digit.

Binary uses only 0 and 1

How to convert binary to hex

Because 16 = 2⁴, every hex digit stands for exactly four bits (a nibble), and no arithmetic on the whole number is needed. Starting from the right, split the bits into groups of four, pad the leftmost group with zeros, and replace each group with its hex digit.

For 1101011110: from the right the groups are 1110, 0101 and 11, which pads to 0011. So 0011 0101 1110 is 3 5 E, and the answer is 35E.

Learn the sixteen nibbles once and the conversion becomes reading: 1010 is A, 1111 is F, 1000 is 8. Always group from the right; grouping from the left gives a different, wrong answer when the bit count is not a multiple of four.

4 bits = 1 hex digit (0000 = 0 … 1111 = F)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why group the bits in fours?

Four bits have 2⁴ = 16 combinations, the same as the sixteen hex digits, so each group maps to exactly one digit and back. Octal uses groups of three for the same reason (2³ = 8).

What if the number of bits is not a multiple of four?

Add zeros on the left of the leftmost group. Leading zeros do not change the value, so 11 becomes 0011, which is 3.

What is 11111111 in hex?

11111111 splits into 1111 and 1111, which are F and F, so it is FF (255 in decimal).
