Times Tables Practice

Answer one fact at a time. The ones you miss come back a few questions later, and the chart fills in as facts become known.

How this works

Method

Every fact you answer is recorded for whoever is practising, under a nickname or as “You”, and given one of three states. A fact is known once it has been answered right 3 times in a row, each in under 6 seconds, the time England’s multiplication tables check allows. A fact tried but not yet known is still being learned, and a fact never asked is new. Full method

How practice picks the next question

Every fact you answer is recorded for whoever is practising, under a nickname or as “You”, and given one of three states. A fact is known once it has been answered right 3 times in a row, each in under 6 seconds, the time England’s multiplication tables check allows. A fact tried but not yet known is still being learned, and a fact never asked is new.

The next question is drawn at random from the tables you chose, weighted by state: a fact you missed last time counts 6 times, one being learned 4, a new one 3 and a known one 1, so known facts still come back now and then for review. A missed fact is also scheduled to return 3 questions later, and the last two questions are never asked again straight away.

So that new facts don’t pile up, once 6 facts are being learned, new ones arrive much more slowly until some of those are known. A slow right answer neither counts towards known nor sets the count back; only a wrong answer does.

known = right 3 times in a row, each under 6 s

How many new facts each table adds

Learning the tables in England’s curriculum order (2, 5 and 10, then 3, 4 and 8, then the rest), counting × 2 to × 12. Each table adds fewer new facts, because many are already known turned round.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are in a round?

Twenty. At the end you see how many you got right and which facts to look at again; the chart shows every fact you know in green.

Does the timer have to be on?

No. Practice has no timer unless you choose 6 or 10 seconds under More options. Answer speed is still measured, because a fact only counts as known when you answer it within 6 seconds.

Can a parent or teacher see which facts are left?

Yes: choose Print, then Facts to learn. It lists every fact not yet known for the person practising, marked missed, being learned or not tried, with a practice sheet of those facts after it.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. Progress is kept in this browser, in the same place as the rest of your saved data on this site, so it goes into your backup file and folder sync but never to us.
